Abstract

A NEW type of undercarriage recording apparatus has recently been installed by Aircraft Components, Ltd. In order to reproduce landing conditions in the factory all undercarriages are dropped from such a height that the striking velocity of the wheel is equal to that of the maximum design condition. It is necessary for the testing apparatus to have means of recording the forces transmitted to the aircraft structure to prove the efficiency of the shock absorbing mechanism. Records of tyre and shock absorber closure arc taken providing data whereby the designer can make modifications to give the desired characteristics.
