Abstract

Fetters Ltd., of the Hawker‐Siddeley Group, and Start Pilot Ltd. have been associated on a number of occasions during the past few years on low temperature starting tests. Recent new developments in cold starting techniques have enabled Petters Ltd. to offer standard production engines which satisfy both Air Ministry and Admiralty requirements. Starting down to minus 40 deg. C. has been achieved by the addition of only the Start Pilot and a sump oil heater to the standard engine. The most important of these developments is the perfection of fully‐automatically‐operated cold starting equipment which permits almost instantaneous application of full load. This is of particular value for such applications as emergency stand‐by generator sets operating at extremely low temperatures.
