Abstract

THE probability of the loss of one transport aircraft fitted with the new generation of turbofan engines every five years due to bird ingestion causing multiple engine shutdown was the conclusion drawn by Dr Glen W. Schaefer in a recent specialist lecture given to the Royal Aeronautical Society. Dr Schaefer is a Professorial Research Fellow and Director of the Biophysics Research Unit of the University of Technology at Leicester who, after extensive experience in the fields of atomic reactor physics, aerodynamics of gas turbines and axial compressor vibrations, has for the past four years carried out research into the causes of bird hazards to aircraft as well as developing radar techniques for the study of bird and insect migration and bird detection on airfield runways.
