Abstract

ESSENTIALLY, A QSTOL AIRCRAFT must be capable of landing and taking off from a runway not more than 2000ft in length, and at maximum take‐off weight should have a noise level not greater than 95 PNdB at a distance of 500ft from the runway. For a four‐engined aircraft carrying 100 passengers these are extremely difficult targets to achieve, but nevertheless worthwhile, because it would enable aircraft to operate from small airfields closer to the centre of cities with minimal disturbances to the community and at the same time eliminate the congestion at major airports fig 1.
