Abstract

Since its introduction in 1983, the Sonatest Masterscan 310 portable ultrasonic flaw detector using pulse echo technology has, it is claimed, proved more than capable of meeting the exacting non‐destructive testing demands of inspection onsite, in the laboratory and for automated systems. With the introduction now of the Masterscan 310D model, a facility for dry coupling inspection has been combined with pulse echo in the single instrument. Dry coupling technology was developed by Sonatest to facilitate ultrasonic NTD of high technology materials such as carbon fibre, Kevlar, glass fibre‐reinforced plastics, ceramics and refractories. Efficient acoustic transmission is achieved at the transducer/material interface by using soft PVC tips on the transducers, thus eliminating any need for a liquid couplant.
