Abstract

CURRENT maintenance programmes require the provision of adequate testing facilities since the majority of items are subject to ‘on‐condition’ or ‘condition monitored’ processes with the remainder (perhaps 10%) being ‘hard time’ components. On‐condition inspection or tests are designed to remove an item prior to failure or detect deterioration before it becomes serious. The condition monitoring or reliability programme measures the effectiveness of the overall maintenance and operational standards. In British Airways, for example, condition monitoring provides a statisitical summary of aircraft fleet reliability and is a measure of the effectiveness of the way maintenance is undertaken. It also provides significant and timely information through which improvements of reliability may be achieved. Since airlines vary greatly in size and structure, the organisation of such a programme is generally individual to each operator.
