Investment in Excellence — Electroslag Remelting in the USA and Europe

Abstract

The high‐performance superalloys that are used today, for example in aerospace or nuclear engineering, have to be produced from ingots with purity levels that were unheard of some years ago. The deleterious effects of the most minute traces of undesirable elements are well understood, and have to be avoided for these critical applications. Other branches of engineering are following the examples of the “high‐tech” pace‐setters and insisting on new, high purity levels that can be obtained from the latest, most sophisticated refining processes and equipment.
