Abstract

IT IS OFTEN maintained by the staffs of library schools that their function is essentially to ‘educate’ would‐be entrants into the profession, rather than concern themselves with training in the narrower sense of the term. Having accepted that the tendency in library education is towards graduate and postgraduate qualifications, it is difficult to conceive of on‐the‐job training in any real sense being possible. Even if such courses were to incorporate large sandwich elements, there would still remain the need for induction and other forms of in‐service training in all types of libraries.
