Abstract

Information Marketmakers Ltd of 3 Bishop's Way, London E2 9HB claims a ‘first’ for its Directory of information brokers and consultants 1986 edited by Marshall J Crawford and Mary E Moody (ISBN 0 9511436 0 6), price £15. It lists UK ‘brokers’ and consultants with information skills such as the design of databases and information systems, research, monitoring specific information requirements, retrieving and supplying specialist business and technical documents. Individual consultants are included as well as established firms, research associations and some libraries offering fee‐based services. There are indexes of personal names, and areas of expertise. The definition used for information broker is “an individual or organisation who — on demand — seeks to answer questions using all sources available and who is in business for a profit”. About a hundred entries are included but I miss the names of some people and organisations known to provide consultant advice fairly regularly, and I am not happy with the remark in the preface that no attempt was made to confirm information provided by entrants nor to verify credentials.
