Abstract

Commercial lending produces the lion's share of bank profits, so it is only natural that most banks emphasize this primary aspect of their business when formulating growth strategies. Provident National is somewhat different from most banks, however, in that the earnings produced by its trust and investment management activities represent a significant portion of total corporate earnings. It currently has more than $21 billion under management (compared with approximately $1.5 billion or so just ten years ago) and has the fifth largest trust department of all U.S. banks. These impressive statistics did not happen by accident. They resulted from a commitment by the bank's senior officers to develop the investment management side of the business as aggressively as the banking side.
