Abstract

Just before the July 27 press conference announcing the plans to merge their three unions into a 2‐million‐member giant, George Becker, Stephen Yokich, and George Kourpias gathered for a breakfast that symbolized the strategic balancing act they were undertaking. They sat with their own union directors at a triangle of tables—no group claiming a dominant center position—a symbolic statement that the United Steelworkers of America, the United Auto Workers, and the International Association of Machinists, respectively, were already magnanimously teamed to return clout to the sagging labor movement.
