Abstract
U.S. corporations announced a record number of planned job cuts in January, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. There were 142,208 lay‐offs announced in January—the largest number in any month since the outplacement firm launched its survey in 1993. The automotive sector led all industries, laying off 34,959 workers during January; telecommunication companies had 22,060 planned lay‐offs; retailers announced 15,344 job cuts.
