Abstract

The development of silicone modified alkyd enamels by Berger Chemicals Protection Division goes back to the 1950's when they were compared against normal alkyd together with two‐pack polyurethane type coatings. These initial tests showed that silicone modified alkyds had superior chalk resistance to normal alkyds when pigmented with titanium dioxide. Their tests also showed the need for a high silicone level (in the order of 30 per cent of binder solids). Their conclusions were that such coatings had a place in both maintenance and decorative markets. However, the cost of producing a high silicone content product was nearly three times more expensive than for a conventional alkyd.
