Abstract

In the future Information Society, the characteristics and functions of libraries will be greatly transformed, far more than professional librarians now realise. In this article we will consider first the three dimensional impact on libraries — technical, societal and the human dimension. This will be followed by a discussion of the future image of the library as an invisible automated record under global bibliographic control — a storehouse of human historical records.
