Abstract

Revision of ISO Standard 2709 (Documentation‐Format for bibliographic information interchange on magnetic tape) is being discussed internationally. This paper outlines a submission from the UK MARC Office for revisions to the directory structure, the representation of characters, the characters allowed in tags, and the use of tag 002. The submission conforms to a basic policy that any revision should be a process of generalisation so that the existing standard remains a valid implementation of any revised standard.
