Use, efficiency and cost of external information services

Abstract

In this paper I will deal separately with the three main headings of use, efficiency and cost, and where possible compare them with ‘in‐house’ information retrieval services. It would also be convenient and more realistic if we examine the above factors in terms of an existing operational service. Perhaps I will be forgiven for choosing the services offered by the UK Chemical Information Service (UKCIS) since I have some knowledge of that service. For those of you who are not acquainted with UKCIS activities, a very brief résumé seems appropriate.
