Developing Local Nationals in a Multinational
Abstract
Management development is most effectively conducted when all activities contributing to recruitment, growth, retention, and motivation of staff are collectively considered. The experiences of the British American Tobacco Company Limited, a multinational business operating in 52 countries as part of BAT industries, identifies three valuable elements in management development strategy which will contribute to the aim above: the integration of succession planning with other planning processes; devolving discretion to operating companies to develop personnel procedures most appropriate to the individual company's national context; and recognising management development as an integral part of the human resources function.
