Abstract

The most frequent source of bearing failure is insufficient or incorrect lubrication. Other causes may be broadly attributed to indiscriminate mutilation of the bearing surface by grooving, which is only too often resorted to with the well meaning but mistaken idea of counteracting any shortcomings in the bearing metal itself. Frequently this is due to the fact that slow speed bearings, or journals often starting to rotate from rest, or oscillating journals, do not allow the development of an oil wedge.
