The Trend in Brake Fluid Temperatures

Abstract

IT is unusual, in Great Britain, to ascribe a brake failure to faulty brake fluid, mainly because only reliable grades of this medium are employed, but trouble can be, and sometimes is, caused by the use of inferior fluids. Attention was called, in the U.S.A. during war time, to the fact that there was no commercial or government brake fluid specification, and following the war motor‐car manufacturers became concerned about the number of serious accidents due to brake failures caused by unsuitable brake fluids. Two specifications are now employed, SAE Heavy Duty Brake Fluid, Spec. 70R1, and Moderate Duty Brake Fluid, SAE Spec. 70R2. The major difference between these specifications is boiling point.
