Abstract

The culture of ancient China included a knowledge of the mechanical arts since their wooden mills, operated by foot‐power or wind, were well made and indicated a good knowledge of early mechanics. Their various mechanical machines included one for drilling iron and, of course, unguents were required to lessen friction between bearing surfaces.
