LIP SEALS FOR USE IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

Abstract

In his paper to the Society of Automotive Engineers at Detroit at their Automotive Engineering Congress, in January, R. R. Toepel (Research Laboratories, General Motors Corpn.) discussed the design of rotating shaft lip seals in current passenger automatic transmissions. Whilst automatic transmissions are more prevalent in the U.S.A. than here or in Europe, the units employed are similar in many ways and certainly the facts concerning oil seals are applicable to all.
