Abstract

THE NUMBER of lubricating oil companies in the United Kingdom has diminished very considerably over the past twenty years and is continuing to do so. The tendency is for the larger company to take over the smaller one : there is no room today for the small inefficient oil company. Many of the smaller lubricating oil companies have not been able to offer the sound technical service that is so essential today, and their business has been lost to the progressive competitor. In fact, an oil company must include on its technical staff both qualified chemists and engineers to help and advise upon the lubrication problems that are constantly arising in connection with modern power plant, But, this “weeding out” of the smaller inefficient companies has left us with a nucleus of firms who have built up a reputation for technical know‐how, and certainly this type of service is not offered only by the biggest companies.
