Indal: 27 acquisitions in 18 years
Abstract
Ed: Indal Ltd., a diversified, Toronto‐based industrial organization made up of 50 small‐ to medium‐sized companies with sales ranging from $3 million to $60 million, has achieved remarkable business success by adhering to one main philosophy—decentralization. Indeed, its practice of operating decentralized companies, in markets served and managed by experienced regional entrepreneurs, has paid off handsomely. Founded in 1964 as a small extruder of aluminum and producer of cold rollformed metal products, Indal now employs nearly 7,000 people at 80 plants, warehouses and sales offices throughout North America. Mr. Coughlan's article, therefore, provides a rare insight for those curious as to the details of Indal's explosive growth.
