Abstract

If small manufacturing companies are to be helped in introducing new technology they need both good advice suited to their size and a temporary injection of specialist help. This can be provided by a major academic institution at a realistic cost using academic staff and newly qualified graduates working under their guidance. The case histories of attempts by seven small manufacturers to introduce new technologies, four using academic and graduate help, and the effectiveness of this approach, are described.
