Abstract

Research libraries typically acquire materials written in many languages. Providing effective bibliographic control of these materials requires using an extended character set, often referred to as the extended ALA character set, to represent special characters and diacritical marks found in languages other than English. This character set is more specifically known as the American National Standard Extended Latin (ANSEL) character set.
