Help Screens for OCLC Users
Abstract
As the number of Post‐It notes, “cheat sheets,” and other paper devices affixed to our PCs attest, infrequent users sometimes have difficulty remembering DOS commands and other micro‐related terms. When using a PC to access bibliographic services such as the OCLC system, the situation is complicated by the need to know logon procedures, command language structures, even how to exit the system(s). Although paper is functional, many of us have sought a way of preserving user‐friendly notes in a more easily accessible and, preferably, automatic form. A new book by Paul Somerson, an editor at PC Magazine, with an enclosed disk containing more than 200 utility programs, now makes it possible to provide a type of help screen that has been needed.
