Abstract

In the UK, a contract of employment does not have to be in writing. This can cause problems for employees who may be aware of the basic terms of their employment, but not details such as overtime working. The terms which consolidating legislation in 1978 set out are given. It is important that the terms and conditions in a contract are clearly understood by the employee. It is advised to have these terms set down in writing.
