Abstract

New technological ideas must be employed more efficiently to increase an EEC country's ability to compete. There are many barriers to exploitation of new ideas, but certain measures can help: academic researchers should be able to undertake consultancy work; increase R&D contracts to small companies; financial institutions need to be more supportive of new technology; Government to promote equity seed capital; academic spin‐outs need low‐cost premises and access to advice; large companies should be encouraged to take minority investments in small companies; collaboration between academia and industry should be increased.
