The training and effectiveness of training for young people on the Government's new deal, which aims to help the unemployed into work, will be subject to independent inspection by the Training Standards Council.

Inspection teams will look at the way in which training is planned, managed and delivered, the resources available to young trainees, the support they receive, their success rates and the equal-opportunities policies and practices of organizations running new deal programmes.

David Sherlock, chief executive and chief inspector, said: "If the new deal is to tackle the problem of unemployment properly, we must ensure that young people are trained for the world of work. They can learn not only through formal training programmes leading to qualifications, but also through their experiences in the workplace.

"New deal trainees deserve training which is relevant, of high quality, helps them to obtain useful qualifications and which, as far as possible, helps them to pursue their chosen occupation.

"The public also needs to know the Government funding for the new deal is money well spent."
