More money for the Socrates education programme and Leonardo vocational-training programme in next year's EU budget has been backed by the European Parliament committee on budgets.

In the context of a tight overall budget settlement, the committee called for an extra 99 million ecus for Leonardo and an extra 12.8 million ecus for Socrates. (One ecu is worth about 70 pence.)

The committee also sent a strong signal to the Commission over the poor management of fraud in some external programmes. MEPs proposed to delay spending around 130 million ecus earmarked for the Tacis programme of help to the states of the former Soviet Union. Some of this money would have been devoted to training.
