Keywords Employers' organizations, European Union, Vocational training

European employers believe it is "unacceptable" that they should have only observer status on the management committee for phase two of the EU Leonardo vocational-training programme, which will run from 2001 to 2004.

The Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederations of Europe (Unice) points out that employers are, after all, major players in vocational training.

Unice also expresses regret that the European Commission proposals for Leonardo II fail to promote a European dimension in the organization and content of vocational training offered under national systems.

Unice supports the Leonardo effort to promote lifelong learning in Europe, but regrets that some aspects of the programme are limited to young people.
