A project to encourage small businesses to train their employees will be offered up to £250,000 from the European Social Fund.

The project, by a consortium led by the Further Education Development Agency, will improve the services which further education colleges offer to small and medium-size firms. It will result in advice for further education colleges on running courses for small firms, and guidelines on designing relevant training programmes. The project has a major emphasis on the use of information and communication technologies.

Other consortium members include British Aerospace, Apple Computer UK, ICL Education, the Open University and Sussex Enterprise.

Chris Hughes, Further Education Development Agency chief executive, commented: "The project will be an important step towards demonstrating the ability of further education to take a significant role in the University for Industry."

Further information is available from Liz Marshall, at the Further Education Development Agency, on 0171 962 1280.
