An increasing number of small businesses are taking part in EU research programmes, says the European Commission.

More than 12,000 small and medium-size firms took part in such programmes during at least one of the five years to the end of 1998. Some 64 per cent were newcomers to the programmes.

Many businesses were attracted by measures intended specifically to increase the participation of small and medium-size firms in research. The Commission has proposed that special measures for small and medium-size companies should continue as part of the next phase of the EU's programme for research the so-called "fifth framework programme" which is due to run from 1999 to 2002.
