More students are gaining GNVQs, according to the Joint Council of National Vocational Awarding Bodies.

By the end of September 1998, 107,876 students had gained a full GNVQ award. Three in five advanced-level GNVQ students gained a full award, which is equivalent to two full A-levels, and three in four achieve at least six units, which are the equivalent of one A-level.

The number of GNVQ students applying to university has tripled in three years. Last year, almost 90 per cent of institutions had offered places to GNVQ students before clearing began.
