Drivers in short supply
Keywords Road transport, Skilled workers, Skills shortages
A shortage of drivers is revealed in a survey of around 1,000 companies carried out for the Road Haulage Association.
The survey, Skills for the Future, also shows that workers in the road-haulage industry in Britain fail to meet today's required standards in information technology, marketing, customer care, literacy, man-management and financial skills.
Association spokesman Ian Hetherington said: "We have undertaken this survey not so much to tell us what has happened but, rather, to enable us to plan for the future and find the solutions to the two key problems which, the survey reveals, beset the industry.
"Clearly, there is a serious driver shortage, especially in some regions of the country. However, the survey reveals that this is only one aspect of a major skills shortage throughout the industry. Employers have expressed serious concerns about the skill levels of their existing employees."
