University and further education students are helping to raise reading levels in schools, thanks to the Community Service Volunteers (CSV) Learning Together literacy initiative.

The scheme trains students to help school children, up to year eight, to develop reading skills. Students are trained to establish the reading level of the pupil, identify three levels of difficulty in children's books and use techniques to convey enthusiasm when reading.

"Learning to read is one of the most liberating experiences a child can have, and helping children to learn to read is one of the most rewarding", said Professor Michael Baraner, head of the standards and effectiveness unit at the Department for Education and Employment, who launched the scheme.

"Initiatives such as this harness the enthusiasm and creativity of young people to help to transform the nation's ability to read. It should be welcomed by all with an interest in education."
