Whitworth awards worth £3,000 a year have been presented to 14 young engineering apprentices who are about to embark on a degree course.

The awards, established in 1868 by the industrialist Sir Joseph Whitworth, are available to young people who left full-time education aged around 16 with GCSEs or a Scottish Certificate of Education, and who, through training in industry and part-time study, have gained admission to a degree course in engineering.

Once the award holders have satisfactorily completed their degree course, they receive a medal and the title Whitworth Scholar.
