Germany is falling behind in the technology race, says the chief executive of the country's leading software producer, SAP.

Professor Henning Kagermann, interviewed on BBC Radio, said that Germany has fewer personal computers and less usage of the Internet than its European competitors. And Europe itself is investing less in information technology than the USA.

Professor Kagermann said the German education system was partly to blame. Many teachers could not or would not show pupils how to use computers. A non-vocational higher-education system produced 30-year-old graduates with no concept of teamwork and little experience of hard work.

He continued: "I am a little pessimistic. I do not see any indications for change in German society."
