The European Commission is spending 200,000 ecus on a training programme for employees of consumer organisations. (One ecu is worth about 70 pence.)
The scheme will mean that 210 information points in the EU will have staff capable of answering consumers' inquiries about the legal, economic, psychological and sociological implications of the euro.
Emma Bonino, Commissioner responsible for consumer affairs, said the programme was designed as a "mechanism to build mutual confidence".
