Keywords Doctors, Training, Working hours

The European Commission has adopted a number of proposals affecting the working hours of doctors in training, who were excluded from the 1993 working-time directive.

They would be allowed to work a maximum of 54 hours a week over a four-month period. But the legislation would not come into force for another seven years, to enable hospitals to adapt.

The average working week of young doctors in Britain is currently 65 hours. In other EU member states, the average is typically around 50 hours.
