Knowsley Community College has teamed up with IBM in a project to tackle unemployment on Merseyside by providing people aged 16-19 with multimedia skills.

The initiative is one of seven in the IBM Training for Work programme across Europe, designed to demonstrate how technology can overcome the barriers to learning experienced by unemployed people. The Knowsley project uses technology in practical ways to give students skills that will help them to find work in the new media industries.

The two-year training course will provide students with a course equivalent to NVQ level 3, so that they can gain employment or move on to further education. After an initial six months of basic training, student-enterprise teams will be set up to undertake projects producing CD-ROMs and designing Web pages for industry.

IBM has invested around £122,000 to provide hardware and software for the training room, and advice to get the project off the ground. Further information is available from Ushma Patel, at IBM, on +44 171 830 8488.
