A European student organisation, AEGEE, has put forward suggestions for greater integration between higher-education courses in the various EU member states, to give students greater choice in putting together their own degree courses.
The AEGEE vision, outlined at a conference on "Education in 2002", is for a system which combines transparency with flexibility, where each student will have greater autonomy to determine his or her own path of study in a Europe where university teaching has a broad common denominator.
Several speakers urged that each system of higher education should keep its own specific features, but harmonization of structures should allow greater flexibility for students.
All participants recalled the need to ensure the recognition of qualifications across Europe.
