Scotch-whisky distiller William Grant & Son has pledged £300,000 in support of the Young European Prize for Invention and Discovery.

The prize will be awarded by the Nobel Exhibition Trust, the organization behind the Big Idea millennium exhibition in Irvine, Scotland.

An award of £30,000 will be made every two years to the person or team judged most to have advanced mankind through invention and discovery. Winners must be aged between 18 and 35.

The University of Paisley, Scotland, will administer the project. It will be launched using the Internet in spring 2000, and is expected to attract interest from a wide number of European colleges and universities.
