The 1999 edition of the European Management Education Directory, which contains information from all European providers of international management courses, shows that all but one of the business schools already provide ample course information on their own Internet sites. These same sites are on the brink of becoming more than a gadget in supporting the development of managers of the future.
The editors, Rino Schreuder and Yvonne Kuysters, say: "Whereas programmes for development of people skills need tailoring to company-specific needs and face-to-face contacts with others, business skills can be developed with the increasing support of information and communication technology.
"Leadership, empowerment, coaching and other interpersonal competencies will always need group-training methods. But finance, logistics, strategy or marketing will be increasingly developed with the use of less-personal learning methods, individually and at a distance. Business schools recognize this development and already include an increasing amount of these methods in their regular classroom training modules.
"The next steps are already visible: on-line training modules, distance-learning MBAs, e-mail contact with lecturers, chat facilities for virtual-learning groups and virtual in-company universities".
