What makes students happy

What makes students happy

Keywords: Recruitment, Students, Teachers Some 75 per cent of students who are very satisfied with teaching in their college would recommend someone else to enrol, according to a report from the Further Education Development Agency.

What Makes for a Satisfied Student is based on surveys of almost 23,000 students, and finds that students are most dissatisfied with help to choose the right course and financial assistance.

Friendliness of teachers comes top of the ten highest ratings in the survey of student satisfaction. Students are also very happy with direct input from teachers and the effect that college has on their self-confidence.

Anna Reisenberger, the agency's head of participation and achievement, said: "This report shows that students have a good idea of what does and does not work. Colleges should look carefully at their students' surveys. They can give an early warning of dissatisfaction before it turns into low recruitment and increased student drop-out".

Chris Hughes, chief executive, commented: "Our report is a timely reminder that what students want is to get on the right course, have good-quality teaching and achieve what they set out to - a fundamental and enduring message that could be described as back to basics for education".
