"Modernize engineering's image"

Keywords: Engineering, Image, Recruitment

Science minister Lord Sainsbury has urged the engineering industry to promote and encourage Britain's young people to enter the profession as part of an overall aim to modernize the image of British engineering.

Speaking at the annual dinner of the Institute of Structural Engineers, he said: "Engineers will be in the forefront of our drive to meet the challenges of the ever-growing global market while also ensuring that future growth is sustainable. I want British engineers to become as well-known and well-respected as our finest architects and artists. British engineers must stop being modest about their achievements".

He said that British engineering should shed its antiquarian image. "To win export contracts and dominate emerging markets, we must make sure the image of engineering is as up to date and dynamic as our design and architecture professions".
