The number of students gaining qualifications in IT and business skills is increasing, according to the Joint Council for General Qualifications.
More than 10,000 students successfully achieved a General National Vocational Qualification (GNVQ) in IT last year. Across foundation, intermediate and advanced levels, the number of students achieving IT qualifications increased by 38 per cent from the year before.
Business remains the most popular GNVQ choice. Around 32,700 students achieved the qualification at foundation, intermediate or advanced level. This is a 10.5 per cent increase on 1998.
A total 104,108 students achieved GNVQs last year - up 13 per cent from 1998. The overall pass rate was 55 per cent - an increase of 5.5 per cent on 1998.
GNVQs are designed to develop knowledge and skills in broad vocational areas. In addition, students must achieve key skills - application of number, communication and IT - to improve their employability and access to further study.
