Telecommunications firms to become "learning companies"

Keywords Telecommunications, Learning organisations

All telecommunications firms should be "learning companies" by the end of 2001, telecommunications employers and trade unions have agreed. In a letter to the European Commission, they state that each employee will have the chance to acquire training in communications technology and to learn how to use the Internet. They also announce the development, before 2001, of Europe-wide guidelines for teleworking. EC Commissioner, Anna Diamantopoulou, commented: "Training and skills upgrading in new technologies for employees, together with modernization of work organization, are key components of the European employment strategy. Employers and trade unions are best placed to achieve concrete results in these areas. The joint statement from the telecommunications sector, given its strategic importance for the information society, is a clear signal towards modernization."
