Project: "What about Giuseppe Verdi …"

Teachers and young people will be encouraged to discover more about the composer, Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). The year 2001 is "Verdi" year and this project will provide information on Verdi. In addition, the practice of lyrics with young amateur performers will take place during Netd@ys. The project will continue after the Netd@ys week.

European cultural diversity and identityThe works of Verdi can be tackled differently if you are an Englishman, an Italian or a Belgian – This difference enriches the project.

Education and training for improving digital literacyThis project will familiarise young people with the opera and with the use of new media. Video and/or audio extracts can be put online, there can be live discussions with the director, the conductor or other young people.

Project: Virtual student exchanges (VSX)

A school in Gent has a tradition of sending schools abroad "virtually", and small teams of students have collaborated with their peers in countries across the world. This Netd@ys project will promote this concept on a much wider scale by building a network of teachers and institutions and by training teachers on how best to promote the project.

CitizenshipVSX will enable students, especially those who do not normally have the opportunity to travel abroad, to learn about the cultures and traditions of students in other countries. They will have a better understanding of how best to understand different traditions and to communicate in an atmosphere of respect and mutual understanding.

European cultural diversity and identityArt, culture and history will be among several subjects included in the student exchanges, with the emphasis being on popular art and culture. A better appreciation of cultural differences should result, including a better understanding between "bigger" and "smaller" countries.

Equal opportunitiesThose students who are unable to travel abroad will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons by exchanging information and experiences with students in other countries. It should also help students who have wider travel experiences to have a better understanding of those who might live in less fortunate financial circumstances that them.

Education and training for improving digital literacyTeachers will be trained to use ICT, not only in the virtual exchanges, but also in their normal teaching circumstances. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their Internet skills.

Project: Transmission 2000: from art to Net art

A Web site will be created for Netd@ys week in partnership with European multicultural centres and art schools. It will concentrate on the benefits of using the new media in areas such as dance, music and architecture, including live performances during the Brussels Netd@ys launch. Five multimedia modules will be presented online.

European cultural diversity and identityPresenting new European artistic trends in various subject areas, emphasising the creative and educational links.

Project: LEON Learning Europe on the Net

Promoting awareness of the European common origins amongst the youngest generation, concentrating on the Celts and Greeks. Information will be collected and provided on the Internet, in the first instance to a network of 50-60 European schools. There will also be a games session, which will be used to test the participants and to stimulate exchanges between schools. Following an evaluation, about 24 people, students, teachers or representatives of cultural organisations, will be selected to participate in a Brussels Netdays event.

European cultural diversity and identityThe objective is to raise the awareness of the young generation of the common origins of the European population. This will concentrate on the history, culture and traditions of the Greeks and Celts and will combine "classical" educational methods with new technologies.

Education and training for improving digital literacyThe use of the latest technology and access will provide a pedagogical resource to enhance the dialogue between students and teachers and to enable a dialogue between young European citizens and with representatives of educational, cultural and other organisations. One of the outcomes will be the creation and promotion of a model, which can be used by others, stressing the role of teachers and students. The experimental package of learning and teaching methods could be extended to other areas in relation to integration. It is planned that LEON will represent the first step towards a new training concept for the European citizens of tomorrow.
