Children's' news programme

This is an online news programme, developed for and by students. Its aim is to increase understanding of different European cultures through the creation of a new programme involving cross-curricular subjects. The schools involved will develop three different news programmes about past, present and future issues in the areas of culture and history. All the developed materials will be available for teachers and students all over the world through a free and online Web site, which will utilise thousands of lesson plans and other resources.

CitizenshipDuring the making of the programmes, the students will learn about their own culture, history and national identity, but during the broadcast and game phase of the project they will learn about other cultures, celebrating the diversity of Europe.

European cultural diversity and identityThe creation of news programmes about a topic which links the past and the present will provide the students with a better understanding of their history and the history of other countries. Through the planned game programme, they will learn about the differences in cultures in a motivating way.

Equality of opportunitiesThe project will involve pupils of all ages, abilities, languages and cultures.

Education and training for improving digital literacyMuch of the material used will be made available to others through the Apple Learning Interchange. This will enable others to develop similar projects. Workshops for students and parents will be organised on multimedia, the creation of Web pages and digital video.

Children's gardens

The aim is to raise awareness of pupils at the end of their primary education to urban ecology and bio-diversity. Pupils and teachers from Brest and ten twinned towns in various regions of the world will participate and compare their ecosystems.

European cultural diversity and identityActivities will be based on scientific, imaginary and cultural aspects of nature as well as the "playful" relationship between young people and nature.

Education and training for improving digital literacyThe Internet will be used as a pedagogical tool.

Ethnokids

This involves pupils from all different backgrounds, and from several outside Europe, providing information about their environments and on different aspects of their daily lives. For example, information will be included on a Web site of the pupils' schools, their homes, their diets and games. It is planned to develop the material as a pedagogical tool, which will embrace subject areas such as history, geography and civic education.

CitizenshipThe purpose of this project is not only to encourage young people to learn about how other children live, but also to encourage others to learn about them. Although most people have common reactions to the same set of circumstances, some people can have different approaches and can respond differently.

European cultural diversity and identityThis site has been aimed at French-speaking classrooms, bilingual ones or classrooms of French kids outside the French-speaking world. Half of them are European classrooms. A Dutch version of the Web site has been launched and it is planned to extend it to other linguistic and cultural areas. Ethnokids is a tool to discover the richness of European cultures and this will lead to an understanding of the ways of life of children in this third millennium.

Equal opportunitiesThe aim will be to provide the more disadvantaged with ICT support, and money for this will be raised through sponsorship. The organisation already has some experience of this, it was operating in Vietnam last year.

Education and training for improving digital literacyYoung people participating in this project will be familiar with all communication tools linked to the Internet as well as with the graphic material and software.

Extending the European suburbs network

The "Banlieues d'Europe" network was set up in 1992. It links associations, towns, experts, researchers and artists and the aim is to utilise their various artistic resources, especially amongst those members of society who are normally excluded. It will provide an opportunity for young Europeans to exchange ideas on a range of issues, encouraging them to think about their role in society and its cultures.

CitizenshipThe network aims at integrating less favoured populations.

WEB-FORUM: Science, philosophy and human adventure

A Web site which is a platform for exchanging information and ideas on modern science.

The Web site is based on the creation of a direct audio-visual transmission system over the Internet that will allow the participants to react and ask questions in writing via e-mail. This system will then be used to put existing or future public information on line, like discussions aimed at a larger audience, seminars which are of interest to a smaller audience or audio-visual presentations about books or research work.

Education and training for improving digital literacyThis Web site will provide a platform for exchanging information by researchers, philosophers, historians and others. This will allow everybody interested to get information about the progress of science and to think about the social and political consequences.

Europa Cinemas

The Europa Cinemas network, bringing together almost 900 cinemas in Europe, will stage a series of events about the Internet as a tool for arts education and on how to use all its resources in education. Through a large online, interactive treasure hunt on the European cinema, the participants, particularly young people, will be made aware of the new media. Each day, an online magazine will also make it possible for people to discover the diversity and originality of European films. The cinemas of the network will open their doors to the general public.

European cultural diversity and identityThe richness, diversity and heritage of the European cinema will be encouraged through the use of the new media, especially the Internet.

Ave

A meeting of the "Association internationale des mouvements familiaux de formation rurale" will take place in Brussels in November under the patronage of the European Parliament. There will be further meetings or videoconferences, which generally highlight the importance of voluntary work.

CitizenshipA Web site will be created which will provide information about the culture of voluntary work in Europe and it is hoped that this will raise the awareness of young people about general citizenship issues.

European cultural diversity and identityExchanges on this will be encouraged.

Equal opportunitiesThe various events will be open to all.

Education and training for improving digital literacyNew technologies will be used as methods of communicating and learning.
